How the check works

One position says little. A grid of spots shows your whole area.

1You name your business and a searchFor example your business and “plumber near me”. We suggest a search from your Google category, and you can change it.
2We ask Google Maps from 81 spotsA grid of 9 by 9 spots over 3.6 miles (about 6 km) with your business in the middle. At each spot we read your position among the first 20 results.
3You see your whole areaGreen where you are in the Top 3, red where customers do not find you. You also see who holds the Top 3 most often.

Questions

What business owners ask before they run it.

What does the check measure?

Where your business comes up on Google Maps for one search, as seen from 81 different spots around you. Google shows different businesses depending on where the person searching is standing, so one position never tells the whole story. The map shows all 81.

How big is the area?

A square of 3.6 miles (about 6 km) with your business in the middle, checked at 9 by 9 spots.

Is it really free?

Yes. No credit card and no account. You get one email with your map.

Does it work outside the United States?

Yes. It works for any business with a Google profile that shows its address, in any country. Outside the United States, the surest way to find your business is to paste its link from Google Maps: open your business there, press Share and copy the link.

Why does my business need a street address on its profile?

The check measures from the point where Google places your business. A profile that hides its address has no fixed point on the map, so the positions would not mean much.

My result looks worse than I expected. Why?

Google ranks a business lower while it is closed, so a check made outside your opening hours shows lower positions than your customers see during the day. Positions also change from search to search. Run the check again while you are open, and try the other searches your customers use.
