Frequently asked questions

What is a URL slug?

A URL slug is the part of the URL that comes after your domain and any path prefixes. For example, in https://example.com/blog/free-url-slug-generator the slug is 'free-url-slug-generator'. Google reads slugs as a ranking signal, so a clear, keyword-rich slug helps your page rank for the right search.

How long should a URL slug be?

Aim for 3 to 5 words. Google truncates URLs over about 60 characters in search results, and shorter slugs are more clickable, more shareable, and less prone to typos. Drop stop words like 'a', 'the', 'and', 'of' unless removing them changes the meaning.

Should I use hyphens or underscores?

Always hyphens. Google treats hyphens as word separators and underscores as joiners, so 'free_seo_tool' reads to Googlebot as a single word 'freeseotool' while 'free-seo-tool' reads as three separate keywords. Hyphens win every time.

Can I change my URL slug after publishing?

You can, but you need to set up a 301 redirect from the old slug to the new one or you'll lose existing rankings and break inbound links. If you have not built backlinks yet, change freely. If the page has earned links or rankings, leave the slug alone unless you have a strong reason.

Does this tool save my data?

No. The slug generator runs entirely in your browser. We never send your titles to a server. No accounts, no logs, no quota.
